An embedded computer is a single computer system, usually a microprocessor based one, that has a dedicated internal function but is integrated with some other devices, usually hardware in nature. Embedded systems are especially useful because they use their own form of memory and processing power and can be integrated into smaller systems than many home computer devices would require. There are several different types of embedded systems. Some are completely computer related, where the user is limited to using the on board computer's capabilities, while others are peripheral, which means they are attached to the computer via a cable or other type of interface. There are also hybrid systems, which combine aspects of both types of embedded systems.

One of the most popular forms of
embedded computer is the consumer-grade PC. Consumer grade as have many of the same features as the commercial or office-grade systems but are manufactured for the consumer. The benefit of the consumer-grade PC is that it will be less expensive and more easily customized.

Industrial embedded computers fall between the consumer and commercial grades. These are much more powerful and are often sold by the manufacturers themselves. Industrial devices come in many forms but are usually used in manufacturing applications, such as on a production line. They are sometimes made so that they can handle complicated tasks that a normal desktop PC would be too large for. Industrial embedded computers are still more commonly sold by the manufacturers themselves than by third parties.

There are various types of industrial embedded computers available today. They range from desktop PCs to PIC (or programmable logic} based devices, with various types of built in components. Some of these components are special-built for the task at hand, while others are designed to perform the tasks of various types of other components. Some specialized components include microprocessors and microcontroller-based devices. Some common components include memory modules, random access memory, I/O controllers, input and output devices, etc.

Since these embedded computers are mostly sold with a printed manual, it is easy for a user to find information on how to use them and how to customize them for their particular purposes. Most manuals include detailed instructions on how to install the various parts and to use the device. Because they are designed for low maintenance, most manufacturers place a small sticker on the front of the unit advising users to keep the unit clean and not to use it for purposes other than its intended application. Some manuals include cleaning guides for the internal parts. The user guide also contains recommendations on the best dust free cloths to use for cleaning the device.

Embedded computer systems have a number of advantages over traditional desktop PC alternatives. They are smaller than regular desktop PCs but pack a powerful processing and graphics card, along with numerous other high-quality components. The small form factor permits them to be placed in compact spaces, making them perfect for use in mobile computing environments.
